HAWTHORNE ONE of the area's most active fundamentalist churches -it was started 56 years ago by the man who is still its pastor - has become an informal Bible college, attracting hundreds of people to nightly classes during the summer.
Many churches curtail their educational activities in the summer, but the 700-member Hawthorne Gospel Church places such a stress on education that the congregation's founder, the Rev. Herrmann G. Braunlin, could not conceive of a season without Bible classes.
With the closing this weekend of the annual summer Bible Conference at the church, an estimated 2,000 people will have attended classes led by guest speakers propounding a thoroughly fundamentalist view of the Scriptures.
